Spring

Well even though they resist snow in the higher areas of northern Spain, spring is evident in every corner. Apart from the length of days, the milder temperatures and that as such, nature is radiant in this era. It's been a year of great snow and rain so the explosion of life is even more intense if possible. The animals have left their winter slumber, the hairy beasts that abound in these mountains are leaving behind the thick winter coat one more suited to spring temperatures.

Animals such as greater horseshoe bats spend the winter in torpor in caves where temperature fluctuations are not as pronounced as in abroad. A very sensitive time for these animals and of great importance. In spring and again we see these animals flying in the twilight hours in search of insects for food. As you know the technique used by these animals is echolocation. Used ultrasound bounce a certain way in their prey and are perceived by their large ears edited folds called tragus. In the case of the Greater Horseshoe bat there is also a tragus nose.

As I said before, most mammals shed their coats to meet the hot season. In some cases it is very striking as in the stoat who returns to his brown coat (although not all stoats acquire a completely white coat in the Cantabrian Mountains) In other cases a decrease in the volume of the coat. So in chamois, roe deer, foxes, which appear in this time of year with patchy dense areas and more lax.

Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus ) moving hair.

is also a good time to see the champions of the Wildcats. Once the mating season, these cats down to the meadows begin to be a deep green at this time to feed on small mammals. I could not miss the appointment one of the cats that I have checked and it still looks pretty thick hair. You can see the mark on his right ear, reading old entries will recnocereis.

Wildcat (Felis silvestris) resting in a meadow in spring

is a time when water is everywhere and the explosion of green is brutal. I have a friend who says that at times the green is such hurtful sight. This type of intense green plants in margins crecne trails and streams feed into a number of bears after the winter.

Arroyos spring daffodils begin to upholster a large part of the mountain meadows at this time. Gritsándanas is the name we give them the area. It is inevitable to associate this plant with the first days of spring when the tops are still white but it shows that winter is behind us.

Daffodils can also notice the spring in small passerines they are busy preparing the nest, and care of the stakes. This is the case for example of tit usually nest in crevices in walls, holes in the base of trees and hoquedades in general. For photography individual had a nest in a hollow between the stones of a wall.

Finally make a review to those animals that we miss in the winter. I speak of the herpetofauna and more particularly amphibians. Frogs are the early bird vermilion when making your wearing them with the lagoon where caregivers do not have enough snow. We can see many tadpoles qe of this species have come out of eggs. They have also begun the courtship displays marbled newts and webbed in the clear waters of mountain lakes or ponds. Alongside them, the San Antonio frogs sing their songs in the evenings of spring. I photograph a palmate newt terrestrial stage but with the tail starting at that closely match the water phase.

tapped Triton (Triturus helveticus ) in terrestrial phase.

Hope you like it. Greetings and enjoy the spring.
